The Dublin Pass

South County Dublin

Situated between the city of Dublin and its rural hinterland, South Dublin offers the visitor a unique opportunity to obtain an experience of both the city and county. Deep river valleys divide the county into distinct neighbourhoods and provide ready-made green belts uniting the Liffey Valley with Dublin and Wicklow Mountains. There is a wide array of attractions, facilities and services at your disposal, all waiting to be discovered. South Dublin's pivotal position makes it a perfect venue for conference shopping or leisure business, with ease of access to all the national primary routes, the sea ports, rail facilities and the new M50 motorway which makes the airport journey a mere 20 minutes drive.

With almost 1, 400 hectares of public parks and open spaces within the county, South Dublin caters particularly well for sports and leisure facilities covering golf, equestrian, angling, cycling, walking and many water sports. Some of the finer parks of South Dublin are outlined here.

The Griffeen River, tributary of the Liffey, enhances the gentle rolling Griffeen Valley Park of Lucan. The visitor here can cross King John's bridge, claimed to be the oldest bridge in Ireland, and enjoy many pleasant walks through the 120 acres.

Sean Walsh Memorial Park in Tallaght is an oasis at the heart of a densely populated urban area, providing landscaped parkland, ornamental formal gardens and a recreation area for visitors. And on the eastern edge of Tallaght, the River Poddle meanders through Tymon Park, which supports large colonies of wildfowl and boasts many fine water features such as the four ornamental lakes.

Rathfarnham Castle Park, recently lovingly restored to its former glory, formal park of the original demesne of the adjacent castle, whereas Dodder Valley Park, shaped by the river of the same name, is a wonderful linear park running from the Dublin Mountains right through South Dublin. It supports a rich variety of birds and animals and the splendid artificial waterfall here is worth a look.

Corkagh Park, close to Clondalkin, boasts a rich heritage of mature trees, extensive woodlands, beautiful water features and a lovely park. Camac Valley Tourist Caravan and Camping Park is located here where nature enthusiasts and those fond of the outdoor life can relax in the midst of it all.

The River Liffey holds a special place in the heart of Dubliners and the Liffey Valley has been developed into a major amenity where angling, canoeing, boating, golfing and riverside walks can all be enjoyed by the visitor.

And when the weather doesn't permit, there are plenty of indoor and all weather sport facilities to be found in the South Dublin area. - the National Basketball Arena, swimming pools and sports centres.

You can savour a unique shopping experience in South Dublin where the old world charm and traditional shop fronts of historic villages such as Tallaght, Clondalkin, Lucan, Rathfarnham, Saggart, Rathcoole and Newcastle contrast with the scale and convenience of modern multi-store shopping centres such as The Square in Tallaght.

Situated between the scenic Liffey Valley and the picturesque Dublin Mountains, south Dublin is rich in history and natural amenity. Mystical Neolithic monuments can be found in the mountains while the early Christian period is well represented by monastic sites at Tallaght, Saggart and Newcastle. Clondalkin boast a 7th century round tower, granite crosses of a Protestant churchyard along with the small 16th century Tully's Castle.

Some of the other historical attractions of South Dublin include:

  • Rathfarnham Castle, home of the Jesuits for many years. Built in 1588 and renovated in the 18th century. Much of the castle's interior decoration, including 18th century rococo plasterwork, survives today.
St. Maelruain's Church in Tallaght. Celebrated in Irish history as the seat of the monastery founded bySt. Maelruain, leader of the anchoritic movement.
  • Padraig Pearse Museum, St. Enda's Park, Rathfarnham. Where Padraig Pearse, the nationalist and educationalist, ran a school from 1910 - 1916, until he was executed for his part in the famous 1916 Easter Rising.
  • Supported by a diverse range of leisure pursuits both passive and active, fascinating historical sites, excellent food and accommodation, plenty of shopping opportunities and friendly people, South Dublin is the perfect location to visit.
